Alan D. "Johnny" Wygal, 83 of Hinton, passed away Monday June 27, 2022 at Summers Nursing & Rehabilitation Center at Hilldale following a long illness.
Born October 13, 1938 in Hinton, he was the son of the late Charles Gilbert and Christine M. Adkins Wygal.
Johnny was a retired brakeman for CSX Transportation Corporation in Hinton. He was a 30-year member of the Army National Guard and a former member of Hinton and Forest Hill Fire Departments. Johnny was an NRA Firearms Instructor for Law Enforcement officers in the area for many years and was an avid outdoorsman. He especially loved hunting, fishing and camping. He was heavily involved in the operation of the outboard boat races for the WV Water Festival. Johnny was a member of Hinton United Methodist Church, where he took great pride in his service as a trustee at the church. He also took special interest in the Yummy Bag ministry of the church.
Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, Wilma Susan "Sue" Taylor Wygal; two daughters, Rebecca Canterbury and husband Jeffrey F. of Ceredo, WV and Barbara Lynn Wygal and companion Todd D. Canterbury of Fayetteville, WV; one grandson, Nathaniel Canterbury and a sister, Judith Miller of Georgetown, KY. A cousin, Opal Rodes of Hinton also survives.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday June 30, 2022 at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with son-in-law, Pastor Jeffrey F. Canterbury and Dr. John Sauvage officiating. Burial will follow in Greenbrier Burial Park in Hinton. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until time of services Thursday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be: Tom Hutchison, Bob Long, Eddie Cales, Kenny Meadows and Nate Canterbury.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Yummy Bag Ministry of Hinton First United Methodist Church or Summers Nursing & Rehabilitation Center Activities Department.
