Betty Louise (Mann) Puffenbarger, 93, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2025, at Spotsylvania Regional Hospital in Virginia. Born November 14, 1931, in Hilldale, West Virginia, she was the daughter of Lonnie B. Mann and Ethel May Tolbert Mann.

Betty was a strong, independent, and resourceful woman whose life was full of love, resilience, and adventure. She grew up in a hardworking family and drove her father's logging truck at just 14 years old, using wooden blocks on the pedals so she could reach them. She graduated from Talcott High School in 1949, where she played on the boys' baseball team because there were not enough male players. That early determination followed her throughout her life.

At age 18, she married Ralph B. Moye in 1950, and together they built their first home, working with limited means and plenty of determination. She gave birth to her first child a year later. Nearly six years after that, she welcomed her second daughter, and 17 years later, she adopted her son Jeffrey.

In 1957, she left West Virginia for Arizona and made six cross country round trips on two lane roads, often traveling alone with her children. One of those trips took her from Phoenix to Denver in a 1958 VW Bug while pulling a U-Haul trailer full of furniture. She often said, "When you drive a VW Bug, you just can't lug 'em."

Betty learned carpentry from her father and helped build three homes with her first husband. She also enjoyed woodworking and made some of her own furniture. She was an excellent shot, winning many prizes at turkey shoots, and loved camping and fishing. She played guitar for many years and later taught herself how to play the mandolin at age 72. Within six months, she was playing in two bands.

She returned to West Virginia in 1978 with her husband, and together they built their final home. After his passing in 1983, she married Ralph "Herb" Allen Jr. six years later.

Around age 60, Betty took up golf and became a daily player at Willow Wood Golf Course. She quickly became known for her skill and passion, winning numerous tournaments and even playing on the PGA course at The Greenbrier Hotel in White Sulphur Springs. She continued playing well into her seventies, even in the snow, though never with white golf balls.

She hosted a beloved annual music weekend that drew musicians from both near and far. It was a time of food, laughter, and music that everyone looked forward to. She adored her grandchildren and always made sure they were well fed with sweets. She shared her homemade fudge, cookies, cakes, and Hershey bars, and even taught them how to play poker. She remained close with her sisters and extended family throughout her life.

Her husband Herb passed in 2002. At age 77, five years after his passing, her longtime friend of 43 years, Elbert "Pete" Puffenbarger, asked her to marry him. She said yes, gave away most of her belongings, and moved to Locust Grove, Virginia, to start a new life. She and Pete played music together and were warmly embraced by Pete's family, the Locust Grove community, and Flat Run Baptist Church.

After Pete's passing in 2023, Betty continued to live independently and remained active until her passing. She found happiness in simple pleasures and took great joy in seeing others happy. When something surprised or excited her, she would often exclaim, "Oh boy," a phrase her family will always remember. Her approach to life was summed up in one of her favorite sayings: "You get what you get."

She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings Alma Jean Mann Willey, Peggy Ruth Mann Cales, and Lonnie Richard Mann, as well as her first husband Ralph B. Moye, her second husband Ralph "Herb" Allen Jr., and her third husband Elbert "Pete" Puffenbarger.

She is survived by her children, Brenda Moye Jeffries (Tom), Tammy Moye Jackson (Richard) and  Jeffrey Benton Moye.

Her grandchildren include Thomas Mason Jeffries (Kara),  Susan Jeffries Suleske (Adam) and Madison Benton Rubenstein.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 4:oo pm on Friday, August 22, 2025 at the Keaton Cemetery located at 2233 Oliver Ballard Road in Lindside, WV.

Following the graveside service, a gathering will be held at 6:00 PM at Kirk's Restaurant in Hinton, West Virginia.
