Carl Eugene "Teenie"
Carter
Jul 18, 1936 — Oct 21, 2026
Hinton, WV
Thursday
Esquire Cemetery
2:00 - 3:00 pm (Eastern time)
Carl Eugene Carter, affectionately known to his home community as "Teenie," age 90, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at his son’s home in New Lebanon, Ohio.
Born on July 18, 1936, in Hinton, West Virginia, he was the cherished son of the late Russell Carter, Sr. and Lucille Webster Carter. Growing up in Hinton, Carl demonstrated an enterprising spirit at a young age; he would catch and clean fish, carefully packing them on ice to sell to the local railroaders.
A proud veteran, Carl honorably served his country in the U.S. Army. Following his service, he moved to New York, where he dedicated his professional life to public service, eventually retiring from the New York City Postal Service. Upon his retirement, his heart led him right back home to Hinton, where he returned to spend his remaining years.
Teenie was a man of the Baptist faith who lived his beliefs through his actions. He was known throughout his community as someone who was always willing to lend a helping hand. If you needed anything hauled away—even a large appliance—everyone knew they could always count on Teenie. An avid outdoorsman, he loved to fish and hunt, but his greatest joy in life was his family.
He was preceded in death by his son, Carl Eugene Carter, Jr.; his daughter, Loretta Carter; his brother, Russell Lee Carter, Jr.; and his sisters, June Galloway, Phyllis Carter, Susie Mae Tinsley, Sandra Mann, Barbara Carter, Alberta Sanders, Penny Jo Carter, and an infant sister.
Teenie's legacy of love and hard work lives on through his family. He is survived by his sons, Robert Carter (Eileen) of New Lebanon, OH, and Kevin German of Queens, NY; his daughters, Cerita Carter of Beckley, WV, and Karen German Payne (“Pops”) of Bronx, NY.; and his "sons of the heart," Harold Johnson (Jim) of Hinton, WV, Tyrone Johnson of Woodbridge, VA, and Solon Briggs (Jennifer) of Winston-Salem, NC.
He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Shon Jackson, Carl H. Carter, Akeya Carter Simeon (Ebed), Micah (Shonlanda) Carter, Meko Carter, and Mikya German; his great-grandchildren, Sucess Jackson, Hope Carter, Truth Carter, MaKai Carter, and Kimora Fruit; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends.
Graveside services with military honors will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday October 29, 2026 at Esquire Cemetery in Hinton with grandson Rev. Micah Carter and granddaughter Minister Akeya Carter officiating. Burial will follow the graveside service. Those wishing to attend the services are asked to meet at the cemetery on Thursday. Family members will serve as pallbearers.
