Elizabeth Carrington Morriss of Hinton, West Virginia, age 88 passed away on Monday July 25, 2016 at Summers County A.R.H. Hospital following a long illness.

Elizabeth was the daughter of the late Richard MacFarlane and Bessie Aileen Rogers Morriss and was a lifelong resident of Hinton.

She lived a good, normal childhood enjoying the active life of the depression years and the booming life of a railroad town during the World War II era.

As a student, she attended both the Central Elementary School and the old Greenbrier School. She was a graduate of Hinton High School in 1946 where she was Valedictorian of her class. She was a superb business student having achieved a record of "words per minute" on the old manual keyboard typewriter. During the annual citizenship pageant, she excelled in the role of Mother Liberty' until the cessation of the program in later years.

After graduation, she worked at the Hinton Daily News under the editorship of Ott Reuter, Ralph Meeker and later the well-known John Faulconer. While employed there she was among other things, the Society Editor' and the town political and events reporter. One job she loved to perform was counting out the newpapers to the afternoon delivery boys for whom she had a fond affection.

Following her years at the Hinton Daily News, she was employed at the First National Bank of Hinton, later becoming a vice president of the now First Century Bank.

Elizabeth was a member of the Hinton Junior Woman's Club, later becoming a member of the Hinton Woman's Club. She held several elected offices but primarily secretary of the club, of course submitting news items of the club to the Hinton Daily News.

She was a lifelong member of Ascension Episcopal Church in Hinton, where she faithfully served in many capacities including overseeing the United Thank Offering, the annual pecan sales, Periodical chairperson, assisting with social functions, coffee hours, the greening of the church for Christmas, and most lately for a number of years, she served as Altar Chairperson. She loved the music of the church, often playing the organ at services. She learned from an earlier organist, Betty Gray, enjoyed hearing Dr. Buford McNeer, and most recently before she became ill, listening to Eva Marie Lane with Abby Averill singing along.

Elizabeth easily made and cherished her friendships. She made friendships with the young children who frequented her bank and followed their careers and later life as they grew up. It was an unending joy to keep up with them through cards and telephone calls even when they moved away from Hinton. She was actively involved in her classmates from Hinton High School and relished seeing them, hearing from them, and praying for their continued growth and success.

It was a joy for Elizabeth to serve the Lord by being a Sunday school teacher for the young ones coming along. She had no children of her own, but it is a certainty that there are many of her young students who benefitted by knowing her.

Elizabeth is survived by her older brother, Kenneth Chapman Morriss of Ashland, KY, a devoted younger brother, Robert Fielding Morriss of the home, a niece, Elizabeth Robina Srinivasan and her husband "Srini" of West Chester, PA, a nephew, Robert MacFarlane Morriss of Silver Spring, MD, Bruce Fielding Morriss and his wife Shelley of Atlanta, GA, and Raymond Mansfield Morriss and his wife Brenda of Cumberland, MD.

Elizabeth has great nephews and nieces, Christopher and David Srinivasan of Pennsylvania, Nathan Miller of Maryland, Regina Morriss of Florida, Samantha Morriss, Hannah and Will Carmichael, all of Georgia.

At this time there will be no services. Elizabeth has donated her body to the WV School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg. Future arrangements will be under the care of Pivont Funeral Home in Hinton.

Lastly and more important is the recognition and thanks to those providing care and solace during Elizabeth's last days -- Cleo Mathews, Stephanie Mathews O'Keefe, Davis and Joyce Ritter, nurses Lydia and Christine of Summers County A.R.H. Hospital and Debra and Miranda Cline of Cline's Nursing Care. With the hospitality of the Clines, church women and beloved friends, Elizabeth celebrated her 88th birthday on July 18, 2016.
