Gene Davis, of Hinton, went home to be with the Lord on November 22, 2022, at the age of 83.

Born in Wingate, North Carolina on September 25, 1939, Gene was the son of the Rev. John Townley and Viola Ruth Wadsworth Davis. He spent his youth living in North Carolina, moving to Hinton at the age of 17.  He was a 1957 graduate of Hinton High School. He continued his education at Concord University, earning his Bachelor of Science in Education. Following graduation, he began teaching at Sandstone High School. He was a very successful head basketball coach at Sandstone for several years, forming lifelong relationships with his former players. He later went on to earn his master's degree in Leadership and Administration from Marshall University, where he also became an adjunct professor. Gene was instrumental in establishing the first vocational school in the state and served as the inaugural vocational director while being active in the Summers County school system. After retiring, he began working for Westat, an educational research consultancy, where he served as a field director and served on the Summers County Board of Education.

Gene married Wanda Pack Davis in 1963, and together they raised three children. Shirley (Greg) Vandall of Hinton, WV, Donna (Kurt) Spradling of Charleston, WV, and Jonathan (Gina) Davis of High Point, NC. He was a devoted husband, father, mentor, and educator. He spent his retirement years devoted to his children and grandchildren. During this time, he helped them build a house, start a business, babysit, and helped around the community. He was known as the local Bellepoint handyman and volunteered at the Pipestem State Park golf pro shop.

Gene was a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He often helped people without seeking recognition or credit and was a silent benefactor to many causes to which he cared greatly. He was a source of wisdom and strength for his family. Carrying on his legacy are his six grandchildren Haley Lane of Hinton, Heidi Vandall (AJ) of South Charleston WV, Juliana Spradling of Knoxville TN, Evan Spradling of Charleston WV, Noah Davis and Townley Davis, both of High Point NC. Later in life, his grandchildren and great grandchildren kept him active. He often took them fishing, attended their athletic and extracurricular activities, helped with school drop off, and cooked their favorite meals. He will be incredibly missed by his great grandchildren Logan Lane, Olivia Lane, Grayson Dillard, Aubrey Lane, & Crew Dillard. His best companion was his golden retriever, Snookie that he enjoyed taking for rides in his truck and walks at the baseball field.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, brothers George Truett Davis, John Townley Davis II, and his sister Clara Ruth Davis Langdon. Surviving family in addition to his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren include his brother Mitchell Ray Davis of Winston-Salem, NC.

Services will be officiated by his nephew Rev. Randy Davis and Rev. Chris Campbell.

Pallbearers will be Jonathan Davis, Ron Pack, Greg Vandall, Kurt Spradling, Evan Spradling and Noah Davis. Honorary pallbearers are Proctor Kirk, J.R. Kirk, and Roger Hodge.

Services will be held at First Baptist Church of Hinton Saturday, November 26 ^th . Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM, service at 1:00 PM with burial to follow at Greenbrier Burial Park.
