On November 2, 2016, after a long and full life, our most cherished father and grandfather, George William "GW" Butts, Jr. left his earthly life and entered into eternal life with his daughter by his side. His final time with his daughter was comfortable.

He was born on March 23, 1925 at Lester, WV; he was the son of the late George William Butts, Sr. and Ocie Clyde Butts. He was the last survivor of his immediate family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mattie Jean "Madge" (Honaker) Butts, an infant baby brother "Jimmie", Step-mother Julia Butts, a brother Emmett Donald Butts, Sr. and a sister Sue (Butts) Duff.

Other family members that preceded him in death are: TA Honaker, Verdia (Keaton) Honaker, Nell (Butts) Montegue and Daisy (Butts) Van Stavern.

George spent his childhood years in Raleigh and Greenbrier counties.  George left high school in October 1943 to serve his country during World War II. He returned from service and enrolled back to high school graduating in 1947 from Greenbrier High School. He excelled in football and basketball under the guidance and direction of Coach Toddy Loudin.

A 32nd degree Mason, George was a 50 year member of the Hinton Masonic Lodge #62 AF&AM, the Athens Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons, and the Beni Kedem Shriners, past member of the VFW Post 4500 and the Hinton Moose Lodge.

To the union of George and "Madge" was the gift of two children, Phyllis (Butts) Repass (husband Jackie) of Surfside Beach SC and Teresa Ann Butts (companion Alan) of Pipestem ,WV. The wonderful blessing of three grandchildren PJ Murphy (Ed), Courtney Martin (Jon) and Channing Honaker "Chance" Worth, four great-grandchildren, Mattie and Georgia Murphy, Joanna and James Martin  and five nephews and one niece.

After many years of commitment to his farm, the time has come for his weary mind, tired hands and loving heart to rest. Although he will be missed in unspeakable terms, heaven has gained one of the most remarkable men this world had to offer. He leaves behind many wonderful memories full of strength, love and humor that will live on in and through his family.  We will forever cherish these tender memories of our Dad and Grandfather.

We would like to sincerely thank everyone for their heartfelt condolences upon his passing. Your words, gifts, and lovely memories have not only been a comfort, but a sense of strength for us during this difficult time. A special thanks to Hospice of Southern West Virginia and the VA Medical Center in Beckley for the excellent care they provided in his time of need. The family would also like to thank Kathy McHenry, Staci Isaacs and June Turner, for the wonderful love and compassion shown to their father while he was in their care.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday November 6, 2016 at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Pastor Gerald McKinney officiating. Burial with Masonic and full Military graveside services will be in the family cemetery, at the old Honaker/Butts Farm on River Ridge near Hinton. Friends may call from 12:00 noon until time of services on Sunday at the funeral home.
