Gloria Jean "Ozie" Smith, 71 of Hinton passed away Sunday August 25, 2019 at Summers A.R.H. following a brief illness.
She was one of 7 children born to the late Edward L. and Arthelia Medley Smith.
Gloria grew up as a member of Second Baptist Church in Hinton where she served as a junior usher. After graduation from Hinton High School, she attended and graduated from WV State University with a degree in Education. While at WVSU, Gloria was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, was a varsity cheerleader and played with her sister, Linda on the women's basketball team. After graduation, she taught school briefly, but most of her professional career was with the National Mining Academy in Beckley, WV, where she often traveled to provide training in that field. Following her position with the Mining Academy, Gloria relocated to the Washington D.C. area for a few years before returning home to Hinton where she was a devoted primary caregiver to her late mother. During this time, she furthered her personal education by earning a Master's Degree in Management from Mountain State University. Gloria's organizational skills were paramount in producing Lincoln School reunions and she endeavored in this regard in bringing about the most memorable ones. She was an avid reader and loved listening to Jazz. Gloria also had a special love for children, was excellent at interior decorating and crafting projects as was notorious for finding great deals at yard sales and flea markets.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Johnny and Dalvin Smith.
She is survived by her remaining siblings, Edward Smith of Warren, MI, Mary Alice Sweeney of Auburn Hills, MI, Linda Smith of Philadelphia, PA and Robert Smith of Hinton. A host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, including her special nephew, Kevin Sweeney also survive.
A service of celebration to honor Gloria's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday August 31, 2019 at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Elder Lois Larkins officiating. Burial will follow Esquire Cemetery near Hinton. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home. There will be a repast from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday evening at the Magnolia Room in Hinton for family and friends.
