Jane Ann Newton, age 61, of Abingdon, Virginia and formerly of Mabscott, died at her home on January 11, 2017. She was the daughter of the late Stanley Edward Newton and Jane Gum Newton of Hinton.

Jan was a graduate of Hinton High School. She attended Concord College and graduated from West Virginia University with a degree in Mining Engineering. She worked as an engineer for several mining companies in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia, and in several coal testing labs. She had also been employed with the Department of Environmental Protection in Charleston.

A nephew, Michael Clark Newton, preceded her in death. She is survived by two brothers, Dr. Fred Newton and wife Susan from Camp Hill, Pennsylvania and Sam Newton and wife Connie from Pipestem, West Virginia. She was also Aunt to nieces Kara Fleshman, Stacy Newton, Shelly Farber and to nephew Joshua Newton.

Her body will be cremated, and a private graveside service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Pivont Funeral Home in Hinton, WV.  Sympathy donations may be made to Summers County Humane Society, ACWP, at P.O. Box 236, Hinton, WV. 25951.
