Obituary

Johnie Melvin "Frosty" Plumley, age 88, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 5, 2026, at the White Sulphur Springs Center in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

Born in Glade, West Virginia on October 2, 1937, Frosty was the beloved son of the late Johnie Amos Plumley and Nellie Ward Plumley.

He was a lifetime resident of the local area and was of the Baptist faith. Frosty graduated from high school before answering the call to serve his country, proudly serving in the United States Air Force on Marshall Island during the Cold War era.

Following his military service, Frosty built a dynamic professional life. He worked for many years as a yardmaster and conductor for CSX. A machinist by trade, he also co-owned New River Wood. His hands were rarely still, and he was exceptionally talented in woodworking. When he wasn't creating with wood, Frosty could often be found outdoors enjoying one his favorite pastimes, fishing.

Deeply invested in his community, Frosty was a member of the Hinton Masonic Lodge #62 A.F. & A.M. and an active member of the Hinton Rotary Club. For many years, he was a familiar, welcoming face at the Rotary Club's country ham booth during the annual Hinton Railroad Days.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Vivian; his son, Joseph Plumley; his brothers, Tom and Freddie Plumley; his sister, Norma Willett; his nephews, Tommy Plumley and Dennis Willett; his brother-in-law, Jim Willett; and his sisters-in-law, Rita and Wilma Plumley.

Frosty leaves behind a large and loving family. Survivors include his sons, John Plumley (Rexanna) of Hinton and Jerry Plumley and wife Beth of Hinton; his stepdaughter, Rhonda Gilbert of Princeton, WV; and his uncle, Lloyd Plumley of Shady Spring, WV. He is also survived by his nephews, Tim Plumley and wife Pam of Jacksonville, NC, and Kenny Willett and wife Alicia of Buckhannon, WV; his grandchildren, John Ryan Plumley and wife Kelly of Dover, DE, Morgan Plumley of Morgantown, WV, Karli Plumley of Bluefield, WV, Taylor Plumley (Tyler Maltsberger) of Hinton, WV, and John Adam Gilbert of Hilldale, WV; as well as six great-grandchildren, including Laci Maltsberger, Ari Law, Drew Plumley, Emma Plumley, and Ben Plumley.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at the Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton, WV, with Pastor Robbie Merritt officiating. Burial with Masonic rites will follow at the Fox Cemetery in Brooks, WV. Pallbearers will include family members and Masonic lodge members. Friends may visit with the family from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Thursday at the funeral home.
