Joseph David “Joey” Smith, 47 of Hinton, passed away suddenly on Friday October 23, 2026.
Born October 10, 1979 in Hinton, he was the son of Ronnie and Bonnie Wills Smith of Hinton.
Joey was of the Christian faith and was employed by the West Virginia Department of Highways with 22 years of dedicated service as a truck driver and heavy equipment operator.
When Joey walked into a room, you knew it. He was one of a kind and if he knew you one place, he knew you everywhere. Joey loved to tease, always giving people nicknames or trying to wrestle and romp with folks. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter of coon, deer and rabbit. He also loved fishing and 4-wheeling and he adored the hills of West Virginia and the fresh air. Joey was always there to give a hand or help whenever anyone asked, and he was always laughing or “carrying on” in anything that he did. Most of all his love of family surpassed everything. Time spent with his children and his grandchild were most precious and he loved them with his entire heart and was extremely proud of them all. He will be missed by them and all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald “Pete” Smith, Jr., a granddaughter, Amilyia “Millie” Marie, maternal grandfather, Hobert Wills and paternal grandparents, Samuel G. and Leva Graham Smith. Several aunts, uncles and cousins also precede him in death.
Besides his loving parents, he is survived by his children; Logan Smith & fiancé Alexis Trent of Forest Hill, WV, Luke Smith & fiancé Haileigh Bell of Peterstown, WV and Kali Smith of Stanardsville, VA; his pride and joy granddaughter, Lavilyn (Bubbles) Smith; his beloved companion, Crystal Mitchell; sister Regina Meador & husband Don of Hinton; maternal grandmother, Ruby Wills of Hilldale, WV; nieces, Morgan Meador and Heaven Harrah & husband Richard; great niece, Aneva and great nephew, Mason. A host of cousins also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday October 27, 2026 at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Pastors John Offenberger and Felix Baker officiating. Burial will follow in the Smith Cemetery at Tug Creek near Hinton. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday evening October 26, 2026 at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be; Antonio Fox, Chris Fox, Jason Dickenson, Logan Smith, Luke Smith, Jason Dodd, Samuel Smith and Clayton Myatt.
Honorary pallbearers will be employees of the West Virginia Department of Highways, Summers and Monroe County divisions.
Joey’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Summers County EMS, the WV State Police, Summers County Sheriffs Department, Department of Natural Resources and the many friends who came and offered assistance.
