Leatrice Joy Gulley Stone, 99, affectionately known as Joy, long time resident of Hinton West Virginia died on March 2, 2024.

Joy was born on November 25, 1924 to Asa 'Jack' Gulley and Orpha Bennett Gulley on Madams Creek outside Hinton West Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband George 'Pebble' Stone, son Jack Weller, grandson Jonathon Edward and sister Jean Gulley Morris. She is survived by her children Kathy Jane Talley, Thomas Edward  and Betsy Ann Dalstra, sister, Phyllis Parker, grandchildren Chris Edward Stone, Kara Ellen Adkins, Ezra James-Delaney (Katie), Camryn Joy, Skyler Rose, Great grandchildren Jacob, Logan, Jessie and Samuel, nieces and nephews, and her loving caregiver Tina Bryant.

On December 26, 1945 Joy married 'Pebble'. Then in 1950 they moved to St Albans, WV when he went to work at Union Carbide.  After raising their children, Joy decided to pursue a degree in elementary education. When she retired she had earned her Master in education and had taught for over 20 years.

Throughout her life she was a member of Extension Homemakers, a 4-H club leader, member of the Delta Kappa Gamma education society, and First United Methodist Church where she attended.

During her life she traveled extensively. She had pen pals in Australia and England whom she visited and their families visited her. She and her sister, Jean traveled Spain, Italy, France, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Canada, and throughout America.

Joy was an avid gardener and wildflower watcher. She attended the annual Wildflower Pilgrimage at Blackwater Falls for over 25 years and went on many adventures with friends and family hunting wildflowers.

Joy was a remarkable woman who grew up in a time before the Great Depression, saw the beginning and end of World War II, lived in the time of tremendous industrial growth, helped her husband build two homes, nurture her family with her gardening and preservation skills, entered college in her mid forties, fulfilled her dream of an education and teaching career, and lived to enjoy her retirement on the banks of the Greenbrier River.

Funeral services to celebrate Joy's life will be held at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 5th, 2024 at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Rev. John Sauvage officiating. Interment will be in Restwood Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 3:30 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
