Lowell Gene Cales, age 87, of Homosassa Springs, FL, formerly of Sandusky, OH, passed away on September 23, 2026, in Crystal River, FL, after a prolonged illness.

Born on March 13, 1939, in Sandstone, WV, he was the son of the late Huston E. and Reva A. Gill Cales. A proud United States Marine Corps veteran, Mr. Cales dedicated his career to public service as a Lieutenant with the Sandusky, Ohio Fire Department before retiring. Known for his love of the outdoors, he was an enthusiastic gardener.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings: Kermit Cales, Dreama Blankenship, Gerena May Steele, Jennings McArthur Cales, Judy Biggs, Joan Netral, Jewel Cales, and Sandy Cales.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Veronica Collumb Cales; his children, Paul Cales and Chris Shaner; son-in-law Pat Shaner; grandchildren Hunter Shaner and Christa Canto, along with her husband Tom Canto and their daughter, his great-grandchild, Eloise Canto. He is also remembered fondly by numerous nephews, nieces, and great-nephews and nieces.

Funeral services are scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton, officiated by Echols Cales. He will be laid to rest with military honors at the Lilly-Crews Cemetery in Nimitz, WV. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.
