Obituary

Mary Madeline Keadle, 100 of Forest Hill, died Saturday February 11, 2017 at Country View Assisted Living in Peterstown of natural causes. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Born May 2, 1916 at Lick Creek along New River, Madeline was a daughter of the late Frederick C. and Roxie Heslip Clark. She married Charles J. Keadle from Warford along New River on November 12, 1938 in Tazewell, Virginia.

They settled in Dubar in the Kanawha Valley. When Charles enlisted in the Navy during World War II, they moved to California. She worked for a telephone company in San Francisco while he served two years in the South Pacific. After his honorable discharge from Camp Shoemaker, they returned to the Kanawha Valley and made their home in St. Albans.

Madeline worked as a clerk for The Diamond Department Store in Charleston while Charles was a bookkeeper for FMC Corp. After his retirement, they moved to Forest Hill in the mid 1980's. While her health permitted, she was an active member of Fairview Baptist Church where she sang alto in the church choir and was a member of the women's Sunday School class. Madeline was the oldest member of the church.

She was an avid quilter, using a hoop for her creations, and sold many of them. Madeline enjoyed making crafts and working in her vegetable and flower gardens. She and Charles were also caregivers for their great-great niece and nephew, Paige Allison Hill and Kevin Allison.

Madeline moved to Country View Assisted Living in 2008 after Charles' death in 2004.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by siblings, Thelma Neighbors, Florence Jones, Sadie Smith Lykins, Robert Clark, Ernest Clark, Oliver Clark and Arnold Clark.

Madeline is survived by nieces, Betty Jo McNeer and Norma Young, both of Forest Hill, and Dorothy Rogers of True; nephew Billy Clark of Nitro; a great niece who was also her conservator/guardian, Nerissa Young of Forest Hill; great niece Paula Allison of Forest Hill; great niece Lisa Stout of Bluffton, SC and great nephew Greg Payne of Cumming GA.
