Obituary

Mary Lou Barbery Reid, 87 of Hinton passed away Monday August 15, 2016 at Rockin Chair Residential Care in Lerona following a long illness.

Born July 12, 1929 in Athens, WV she was the daughter of the late Thomas Albert & Ennis Faye Grimm Barbery. Mary Lou was the loving wife of the late Billie George Reid who died in 1978.

She was a wonderful mother to three daughters, Robin Reid Turner & husband Darrell, Jayne Reid Angotti & husband John and Riley Reid Mann & husband David, all of Hinton; also surviving are grandchildren, Courtney Turner Ford & husband Tucker and Marshall Reid Mann; great grandchildren, Emma Noel and Sophie Mae Ford; two sisters, Netta Fae Smith of Danville, VA and Dana Kee Birdsall & husband Frank of Afton, VA; sister-in-law, Evelyn Barbery of Athens, WV as well as several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Darrell R. Turner; three brothers, Thomas Albert, Jr., James Calvin and Robert Lyle Barbery and a sister-in-law and her husband Evelyn Reid Garrett and Harry.

Mary Lou was a graduate of Athens High School and Concord College, earning a bachelor's degree in Biology and a minor in public speaking. While at Concord, she was selected Homecoming Queen and was a member of the cheerleading team. Her teaching career began at Covington High School in the early 1950's, before coming to Hinton High School. She remained in Summers County for the rest of her career as an influential educator and administrator. She obtained a Master's degree from the WV College of Graduate Studies plus 45 credit hours, while working and raising her three daughters after her husband's death. She was a member of Miller Memorial Methodist Church in Hinton and Alpha Sigma Tau sorority, and was an avid gardener and birdwatcher. She especially loved spending time with her family and friends. Mary Lou had a passion for learning as was evident by all who knew her.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday August 19, 2016 at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Pastors Butch Honaker and Robbie Merritt officiating. Burial will follow in Restwood Memorial Gardens in Hinton. Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be; Tucker Ford, Richard Crisp, Jimmy Fox, Greg Vandall, Davis Ritter, Tim O'Farrell, and Kent and Jack Hellems.

Nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Rockin Chair Residential Care and caregivers over the past three years, Virginia, Mary Lou, Lorenda, Miss Mary, Peggy and Charlotte.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Summers Middle School, formerly Hinton High School in Mary Lou's memory.
