Nannie Kay Richmond Kirk, age 82, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on Sunday, December 24, 2023, following a long illness.

Born December 23, 1941, in Hinton, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Julian Que and Mary Evelyn Thomas Richmond.

She was a 1959 graduate of Hinton High School, and in 1962, graduated from the Chesapeake & Ohio Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse, practicing for several years at Hinton Hospital.  In 1968, she became Hinton's first Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Instructor, teaching and graduating hundreds of students, who she was always proud to say had all passed their boards on their first try. She left the LPN program in 1974 and began teaching the Certified Nursing Assistant program at the Summers County Career Center and later Summers County High School when the two merged, until her retirement.  In addition to her teaching career, Nannie Kay and her husband, Proctor, owned Kirk's Restaurant in Hinton for sixteen years, where she was well known for baking delicious pies and desserts.

Nannie Kay was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Hinton, where she was a Fidelis Sunday School Class member and served on the In His Service committee for many years. She was also an active member of the Summers County Democratic Women.  She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother, James David Richmond, brother Julian Mark "Buzzy" Richmond, and sister Sue Vallandingham.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 60 years, Jerry Proctor "Prock" Kirk of Hinton, daughter Kelley Henthorn (Charlie) of Lewisburg, WV; sons Dr. Mark Kirk (Autumn) of White Sulphur Springs, WV, and Matthew Kirk (Karen Adams) of Charlotte, NC; a sister, Peggy Huston, of Huntington, WV, and sister-in-law Nancy Richmond of Hinton.  Grandchildren left to cherish her memory include Julie Henthorn Black (Richard) of Raleigh, NC; Ellen Henthorn of Washington, D.C.; Abby Kirk Elkins (Jackson) and son Truett of South Charleston, WV; Ally Kirk of Logan, WV; Carson Kirk of Morgantown, WV; Sophia Vecchio of White Sulphur Springs, WV; and Will and Ben Kirk of Charlotte, NC.  In addition to her family, she will be greatly missed by her two special caregivers, Elsa Taylor and Cassia Gill, both of Hinton, to whom the family will be eternally grateful, and her three lifelong friends, Wanda Davis and Drema Edwards of Hinton and Becky Eades Hess of Wheeling, WV.

Pallbearers will be sons Mark and Matt Kirk, son-in-law Charlie Henthorn, grandsons Carson, Will, and Ben Kirk, and great-nephews Bob Arritt and Chris Bowers. Honorary pallbearers are Richard Black and Jackson Elkins.

Friends may call from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Pivont Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, December 29, 2023, followed by funeral services at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Ronnie Cobb officiating. Burial will follow at Restwood Memorial Gardens in Hinton.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hinton Area Foundation, PO Box 217, Hinton, WV 25951, with a memo noting that it is for the Nannie Kay Kirk Memorial Scholarship Fund for Nursing.

The family would like to thank the Hospice of Southern West Virginia nurses for their great care, compassion, and comfort during this last week.
