On Sunday November 3rd, 2024, surrounded by her loving family, Patricia Ann Edwards, 77, passed from this life to her eternal home with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Born December 6, 1946 in Hinton, Patty was the oldest daughter of the late Carl Edwards and Betty Pettrey Edwards of Summers County. Her beloved stepmother, Mrs. Libby Edwards of Jumping Branch, survives. Patty was a 1964 graduate of Hinton High School.
Also surviving are her caregivers, beloved son and miracle, Derrick Leslie, and devoted daughter-in-law, Missy Leslie of Hinton; joys of her life grandsons, Hunter Scott Leslie and wife Alison of Beckley, and Dylan Allen Leslie of Hinton and girlfriend, Emily McClung of White Sulphur Springs, WV; sisters, Cheryl McCoy and husband Jim of Hillsboro, WV and Dawn Pachuta and husband Andy of Chesapeake, VA; one brother, Gregory Edwards of Lavalette, WV; two paternal aunts, Stella Falvo and Betty Ellison, both of Pipestem, WV. She was predeceased by loving brother, the late C.E. Edwards, II. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins survive as well as many lifelong friends.
Diagnosed with the genetic mutation cancer gene BRCA-1, Pat's battle with highly aggressive cancer began at the age of 31 with her first breast cancer followed by uterine, second breast cancer, skin cancer, ovarian, third breast cancer and acute AML Leukemia taking her life at her son's home in Hinton.
Patty loved people and worked most of her adult life beginning with assistant bookkeeper and society page editor at Hinton Daily News and later as writer and assistant women's page editor at Bluefield Daily Telegraph followed by 20 years employment with Massey Coal Company, retiring as executive assistant to chairman, president and CEO, Don Blankenship in the Richmond, VA corporate office. After moving back to Beckley, WV in her retirement years, she worked part-time jobs at John Howerton Honda, First Christian Church, Ashley Furniture and Tamarack.
Her greatest achievement was as a loving mother and grandmother. She cherished the time she spent with family and friends at Greystone Manor where she devoted her time to reading and studying God's Holy Word, growing closer to her Lord and Savior. Her favorite quote was, "In a world where you can be anything, be kind." Her favorite scripture was "The Lord is my Shepherd. I shall not want," Psalms 23. Her delight was serving her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ each day.
A memorable highlight of her retirement years were "cousin" trips with her sister Cheryl and cousins Terri Kirkham of Hinton, Susan Lawrence of Charleston, and the late Robin Pettrey Cook of Shady Spring.
Funeral services to celebrate the life of Patricia Ann Edwards will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday November 7, 2024 at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Pastors Derrick Leslie and Mark Brandon officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery at Forest Hill, WV. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until time of services on Thursday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be; Alex Walls, Hunter and Dylan Leslie, Michael Wood, Joe Rodes and Shawn Richmond. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Blankenship and John Howerton.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the employees of Hospice of Southern West Virginia and special caregivers, Joann Campbell, Lisa Woods, Jessica Brogan, Connie Smith, Dusty Gardner, Betsy Cole and staff at Greystone Manor. Also lifelong friend and supporter in Jesus the Messiah, Delores Brandon of Chattanooga, TN, Massey team member, Pat Salmons of Little Blue Springs Creek, KY. Former husband and father of her son, Jim Leslie also survives.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital or Tunnels to Towers.
