Phillip M.
Maddy
Jul 3, 1941 — Oct 16, 2025
Hinton
Phillip M. Maddy, 84, of Nimitz, passed away on Thursday, October 16th at the Villages of Greystone following a sudden illness.
Born on July 3, 1941, in Hinton, Phillip was the son of the late Leonard and Clara Meador Maddy. He attended Hinton High School and went on to be a proud union member and laborer, helping to build many buildings, bridges, and roads throughout Southern West Virginia.
A devoted member of Sand Knob United Methodist Church in Nimitz until its closure in 2024, Phillip was deeply rooted in his faith and community. He was an avid hunter and fisherman as well as an ardent gardener and farmer, growing much of his own food and proudly selling his harvest as a longtime vendor at the Hinton Farmers Market—an endeavor that brought him great joy.
Phillip was a beloved figure in the Summers County community, generously volunteering with numerous organizations including the Summers County Democratic Executive Committee and The United Methodist Church.
In his later years, Phillip found pleasure in simple routines—watching the news and sports, sharing conversations with friends, and enjoying a Philly cheesesteak at The Market.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Maddy; his stepson, Lewis Meadows; three brothers, Ronald, Arnold, and Wilmer Maddy; and three sisters, Colean Bolton, Avalene Richmond, and Phyllis Ratcliffe—his twin sister and lifelong best friend.
Phillip is survived by his son, John Maddy (Katie) of Lexington, KY; his stepdaughters, Nancy Hanlon (Andy) and Margaret Barbour (Russ), both of Huntington, WV; and his sister, Mary Pleoger (Skip) of Sedro Wooley, WA. He also leaves behind six cherished grandchildren: Stephen Barbour, Becca Barbour, Abby Hanlon, Adam Hanlon, Jack Maddy, and Sam Maddy.
