Obituary

Robert McCormick Baber, 97 of Hinton, WV passed away on Thursday February 19th, 2026 at the Villages of Greystone in Beaver, WV.

Born October 2, 1928 at Renick, WV he was the son of the late James Clark and Lula Renick Baber.

Mr. Baber was a graduate of Renick High School. He later graduated from West Virginia University in 1958 because he returned home to manage the family farm due to his father becoming ill. He retired as a Summers County Extension Agent, having worked there for 30 years.

Robert will always be remembered for his loving kindness to his mother and sisters when he had to interrupt his college career to take care of his family's responsibilities. Robert was an avid football fan, especially the WVU Mountaineers and was never seen without wearing one of his WVU hats. Some of his most cherished memories were spending time and mentoring his great grandson Zachery Wayne how to swim, ride a bike, and watching him play football throughout his school years.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Baber was preceded in death by his devoted wife, JoAnn Baber on November 7, 2016, brother, Jim Baber, and sisters Betty Eyestone and Sue Hume.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory and to continue his legacy include a step-daughter, Sandy Holliday of Beckley; sisters, Patricia Sergent of MD and Dare Draughn and husband Clyde of MD; two grandchildren, Kim Wayne (Bob) of Beckley and Kristen Clay and husband Gary of Cool Ridge;  two great grandchildren, Zackery Wayne of Pennsylvania and Khloe Clay of Cool Ridge; one great, great granddaughter, Blakely Wayne of Beckley; nieces, Maureen Parel (Steve), Lisa Russell (Bill), Kristi Harris (Jonathan); nephews, Jimmy Baber (LaRea), David Hume (Sharon), Alan Sergent (Fanny) and several grand-nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday February 28, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Rev. Tom Coffman officiating. Burial will follow in the Crook Cemetery at Jumping Branch, WV. Friends may visit with the family from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Family members will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southern West Virginia, 454 Cranberry Drive, Beckley, WV 25801.
