Robert (Bob) Daniel Moon, Jr. passed away quietly on October 13, 2016, in South San Francisco, CA, following an extended illness. He was 86 years old. Born on December 30, 1929, Bob was the son of the late Robert Daniel Moon, Sr. and Hattie Jones Moon of Hinton, WV. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorris Jackson Moon, in 2012.

After graduating from Lincoln School in Hinton, Bob enlisted in the United States Army and served his country honorably for 21 years, earning the rank of Sergeant First Class. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars and was stationed in Germany, France and Japan at various times during his military career. After retiring from the Army, Bob embarked on a second career as an insurance agent/manager with Combined Insurance Company of America in the San Francisco Bay Area. In the mid-1970s, Bob and Dorris were married and made South San Francisco, CA their permanent home.

Both as a serviceman and civilian, Bob's reputation was that of a "people person." Strangers often became immediate friends with Bob, especially when he connected with other servicemen and servicewomen during his travels. He touched the lives of many with his broad grin and generosity. Bob put his outgoing personality to good use as an active member of several community and social groups, including the Elks, Masons and Shriners. Within these organizations, he served in a variety of leadership capacities. As a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks (BPOE), Peerless Lodge #46 in Berkeley, CA, Bob was a Past Grand Exalted Ruler and Treasurer for many years. As the result of a merger with Athens Lodge of Oakland, CA, Peerless Lodge became Bay Area Lodge #70 in 2012. Bob continued his membership until his health no longer allowed his participation. He also served many years as State President and District Deputy for the San Francisco Bay Area.

As a member of the Most Worshipful Hiram of Tyre Grand Lodge, AF&AM, Inc., Bob held the position of Grand Bible Bearer for a time and ultimately attained the high distinction of 33rd-degree Mason. Bob was a long-time member of Model Lodge #29 of Oakland, CA and served as the Right Worshipful Master of the Lodge for several of those years and Secretary for many more. He also was a member of the Royal Lodge of Perfection #1, the St. Andrew's Consistory #2, Growing Star #8 of the Royal Arch and Mecca Shrine Temple. Bob served too as Manager of the Shrine Lounge and was a member of the Mecca Shrine Club. Additionally, he held the position of President of the Par Excellence Social Club while holding other positions throughout his lengthy membership. In fulfillment of his varied responsibilities within these organizations, he often attended state and national conferences and enjoyed immensely the social interactions.

As a young man, Bob was an outstanding athlete, earning recognition both for his talent on the basketball court and football field. Later in life, his enthusiasm for sports continued as a spectator. He enjoyed watching college and professional basketball, football and baseball on television. It was a good day whenever the San Francisco 49ers were playing. He was interested in politics as well and followed the daily twists and turns of the current presidential election.

After becoming seriously ill, Bob relied on his Christian faith for comfort. He consistently expressed a sense of peace with his circumstance, even as his body failed him. Bob maintained his trademark sense of humor until the end. Throughout much of his adult life he was a member of Providence Baptist Church in San Francisco, CA. He also was a generous supporter of Camon Baptist Church, his childhood church home, which was founded in 1919 by his grandfather, David Jones, his grandmother, Artie Law Jones, who donated the land upon which that church was built, and others. Bob was extremely proud of his family as well as his small-town West Virginia roots.

Bob is survived by his daughter, Valerie Nelson (Richard); stepson Derek Tucker (Max); stepdaughters Roselle Jones (Danny) and Alison Tucker; stepson Curtis Adams and Curtis' mom, Hosea Martin Jones, Bob's first wife. He also leaves behind a host of nephews and nieces, including Dr. Swanson Carter (Carolyn), Gregory Gibbs (Greg), nieces Mischa Carter and Joy Baker (Charlie); sister-in-law Linnie Faye Carrington; and many loving grandchildren, including Delon Williams, who lived with Bob, and Patrice Crowell, who assisted in his care, several great-grandchildren, great-nephews and great-nieces, as well as many cousins and friends.

In addition to his wife, Dorris, Bob was preceded in death by his only sister, Louise Carter Gibbs; brothers, David Moon and William Brooks; and his beloved nephew, William Gibbs.

Bob's remains were cremated in accordance with his wishes and will be interred at Hilltop Cemetery in Hinton on Saturday, November 12, 2016, 1:00 PM, following a brief graveside service with family and friends that will include Military Funeral Honors.
