Straley Edward "Gene" Stanley, 94 of Nimitz, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday evening March 2, 2024 at Summers Health Care Center at Hilldale.
Gene was born on November 30, 1929 at Flat Top, West Virginia, a son of the late Frank H. and Eula Bennett Stanley.
Gene served his country as a medic for the US Army in the Korean War. After his military service, he began a career on the railroad, first as a brakeman for the C&O Railway Corporation. He later transitioned to a conductor for Amtrak, where he would spend the rest of his career until retirement. Gene was a member of Grace Baptist Church at Nimitz. His love of cars was well known, especially his affinity for Ford and Lincoln vehicles and he loved to cruise the roads of West Virginia as long as his health permitted.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Mary Garnet Lilly Stanley. Also by a granddaughter, Alex Brittany Ward.
Left to cherish Gene's memory include a daughter, Lana Ward and husband Teddy of Greenville, NC; one brother, Richard Stanley and wife Nina of Daniels, WV and three sisters, Dana Pack of Daniels, WV, Elizabeth Edwards of Jumping Branch, WV, and Rhonda Gail Patrick (Steve) of Winston Salem, NC; six grandchildren, Jonas Ward, Jenae Cleghorn, Noah Ward, Gabriel Ward, Isaiah Ward and Micah Ward; five great grandchildren, Mykelti Ward, Matilda Ward, Amelia Cleghorn, Judah Cleghorn and Alessia Ward.
Funeral services for Gene will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday March 6th , 2024 at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Pastors Bill Ballengee and Andy Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the Lilly-Crews Cemetery at Nimitz. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until time of services on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
