Obituary

Sue Shanklin, 85, of Jacksonville, Florida, formerly of Charleston, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2025, at a hospice care facility following a brief illness.

Born on November 4, 1939, in Ronceverte, West Virginia, Sue was the daughter of the late Raymond and Maizie Morgan Bennett.

She later moved to Hinton, where she graduated from Hinton High School, and eventually settled in Charleston. There, she built a fulfilling career in state government before joining the West Virginia State Medical Association, where she served as Executive Administrative Assistant until her retirement in 2005.

In 1966, Sue married the love of her life, Chester Shanklin. They shared 30 wonderful years together until his passing in 1996. Sue found joy in cooking for her family, creating cherished meals and lasting memories around the table. A woman of deep faith, she was a devoted member of Oakwood Baptist Church for over 50 years and served faithfully on the kitchen committee.

Sue is survived by her sister, Debra Pettry (David); nephews CD Pettry (CeCe) and Jonathan Pettry (Jessica); grandnephews Charlie and James; and grandniece Julianne, all of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Helen Bennett; niece Sherry Shaffer; and grandniece Kelley, all of Summerville, WV; as well as sister-in-law Ramona Bennett and nephew Stevie Bennett of Hinton, WV.

She was preceded in death by her stepdaughter, Barbara Shanklin Isner. She is lovingly remembered by her stepdaughter, Jane Shanklin Henchcliffe (Joe); step-grandchildren Liz Brusherd (Joel) and Chris Henchcliffe (Amanda); and three step-great-grandchildren.

A cryptside service will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Graceland Memorial Cemetery Mausoleum in Charleston, WV. The service will be officiated by Joel Brusherd. Friends may visit from 12:30 pm to 1:00 pm at the Graceland Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel on Saturday.  Entombment will follow the cryptside service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Sue's memory to Community Hospice, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, Florida 32257.
