Obituary

Thomas John Mathewson of Meadow Bridge, WV passed away April 15, 2025. Tom was born on December 7, 1967 in Hammond, Indiana to his parents Thomas J. and Judith A. Brunner Mathewson.

He was a graduate of Morton High School's Class of 1986 and also attained the rank of Eagle Scout in his local scouting program. After graduating high school, he served in the 82nd Airborne Division in the United States Army. He was employed at LaSalle Steel in Hammond, Indiana before he started his 28-year career as a General Engineer of signal construction on the CSX Railroad.

Tom is survived by his wife, Jo Ellen Mathewson of Meadow Bridge, WV; his parents, Thomas and Judith Mathewson of Plymouth, Indiana; his children, Charlie (Katie) Mathewson of Valparaiso, In, Sarah (Jerry) Maher of Meadow Bridge, WV, Benjamin (Jessalyn) Mathewson of Valparaiso, In and step-daughter Olivia (Hunter) Whittington of Deland, Fl.; brother, Richard A. Mathewson (Renee) of DeMotte, In.  Also survived by are his grandchildren: Aulani, Malina, & Leilani Mathewson, Aiden & Kimlea Maher, Benjamin & Theodore Mathewson.

Tom is preceded in death by paternal grandparents Thomas C. & Lucille Mathewson, maternal grandparents Robert & Leona Seifert, his sister Roberta Lynne Mathewson, his son Michael Mathewson and his late wife, Kum Cha Mathewson.

Tom's favorite pastime was fishing. His grandfather Carter taught him at a very early age everything required to become the best fisherman ever and he did just that. Fish feared him! He enjoyed his annual fishing trips with friends and family fishing the Mississippi River in Northern Wisconsin. In his free time, when he wasn't spending it fishing, he loved spending time with his grandkids and vacationing on cruises. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, April 21, 2025 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Hinton, WV with Fr. Bao Nguyen, SVD as celebrant.  Rite of Committal will follow at the Gwinn cemetery in Lockbridge, WV.  Friends may visit from 10:30 am to 12:45 pm at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton on Monday.
