Obituary

Thomas “Coach Tommy” Ward, 71, of Sandstone, died Monday, June 8, 2026, peacefully at his home.

Born March 25, 1955, in Hinton, he was the son of the late Franklin and Virginia Ward.

Coach Ward, was a 1973 graduate of Hinton High School, and a 1997 graduate of Concord College, and a retired school teacher. He was also a former EMT with the Summers County Hospital, a coach for multiple Bobcat sports, and a former trainer with Summers County High School.

He was a lifelong resident of Summers County and enjoyed telling jokes, and making people laugh.

Besides his parents, he was preceded by several special aunts, uncles, cousins, and a brother-in-law.

Survivors include his wife, Lucinda Ward of Sandstone, a son Scott Ward (Danielle) of Martinsburg, and a daughter, Heidi Richmond (Dustin) of Hinton. One sister, Beverly Hickman, of Bland, Virginia, two grandchildren Landon (Akira) and Tyler Richmond, two great grandchildren, Lennox, and Lachlan Richmond , one niece, Raelynn Hickman, one great niece, Whitley, and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, and a host of extended family members whom he loved dearly, also survive.

A private family viewing will be held at Pivont Funeral Home, with cremation to follow.
