The passing of William (Bill) H. Phillips, age 84, was on Jan 2, 2019. Bill was born May 6, 1934 in Charleston, WV. He was preceded in death by his father William Phillips, his mother Della Gwinn Richmond and his sister Erma Smith. Survivors are his daughters Elvira Phillips Hebda and Evelyn Ruth Phillips, son Peter John Phillips, grandson Peter Hebda, granddaughters Callie and Lindsey Phillips, grandson Reed Phillips, nephew Brian Smith and former wife Elfriede K. Schubert.
He enjoyed history, archaeology, and interacting with other cultures. He was very active. He volunteered with local historical societies, served as curator for the historical Graham House in Lowell, WV, was a Rotarian, was a cofounder of the Veterans Museum in Hinton, and was a recipient of the West Virginia History Hero award. He served a two-year tour of duty in the U.S. Air Force. He was retired from the American Red Cross after 30 years. His early years were in assignments in Korea, Viet Nam, the Philippines and western Europe. He returned to Viet Nam for a second assignment as Regional Director for the Southeast Asia Region. During later years he served primarily in field operations, chapter development and responding to disasters. He received the American Red Cross Legacy Award for his service in Korea, the Philippines and Viet Nam. He was recognized for many achievements during his life.
He attended West Virginia Tech. He graduated from Marshall University.
His remarkable kindness, generosity, courage, and humanitarianism have been and will continue to be an inspiration to his family, colleagues and friends, and all who knew him. He will be dearly missed.
