Obituary

Wilma Susan Wygal, 78, of 313 James Street, passed into the presence of Jesus on Monday, June 24, 2024, at the Summers Healthcare Center in Hilldale after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

She was born on September 13, 1945, in Hinton to the late Alanzo (Lon) and Wanda McCandlish Taylor, and was a resident of Hinton for most of her life.  She was a 1963 graduate of Hinton High School, graduating near the top of her class, a 1989 graduate cum laude of Concord College, and a graduation of COGS (College of Graduate Studies) with a master's in education. She was employed in various jobs, eventually retiring as a teacher in the Summers County School system.

Her great talent was in music, having learned the piano at a young age. She then was trained on the pipe organ through an instructor from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and became the organist at her home church, the First United Methodist Church of Hinton, at the age of 13. She held that position for several years until 1981 when she took the organist and choir director position at the First Presbyterian Church of Hinton, where she served for 23 years. At the same time, she played for other churches in town, including St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Ascension Episcopal, and Central Baptist. After her retirement from the Presbyterian Church, she returned to the church of her youth, the Methodist Church, where she again was the organist until health would no longer permit. She was named Organist Emerita in 2016, after a total of over 20 years of service. She was the primary organist at Pivont Funeral Home for over 25 years. She also participated in and was director for the Summers County Community Choir.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of almost 59 years, Alan (Johnny) Wygal, a sister, Jean McCandlish/Taylor, and a sister-in-law, Judith Miller. She is survived by her two loving daughters, Rebecca Canterbury and husband Jeffrey F. of Huntington, WV and Barbara Lynn Wygal and companion Todd D. Canterbury of Hinton, WV; and one grandson, Nathaniel Canterbury of Huntington, WV.

Funeral services will be Friday, June 28, 2024, at 12 PM at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton, with son-in-law, Pastor Jeffrey F. Canterbury officiating. Friends may visit from 11:00 am until the time of the service. Burial will follow in Greenbrier Burial Park in Hinton.
